Apply to be our Jean Valjean

BMOS Musical Theatre Company will be producing this show, with the collaboration and support of West Bromwich Operatic Society, Bilston Operatic Company and Bournville Musical Theatre Company.

Show week is Sunday 8th June to Saturday 14th June 2025. There will be a total of seven performances, from Tuesday 10th – Saturday 14th June (five evening performances plus two matinee performances on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th). 

We are looking to find a strong performer to be our Jean Valjean. Previous candidates are welcome to reapply.

How to apply

If you wish to audition for the role of Jean Valjean in our production of Les Misérables – Let The People Sing, please do the following:

  1. Check your suitability against the role profile provided below.
  2. Record a short video of you singing Bring Him Home. The music and lyrics can be viewed using this link.
  3. Upload your video file to a video sharing platform that is convenient for you (for example, YouTube, Vimeo, TikTok). 
  4. Complete the application form. Please provide the link to your video when asked on the application form. You will also be asked to upload a recent headshot of yourself.

Role Profile

35 to 40’s. Sings to B high lyric baritone or tenor, with both strong low notes and a strong falsetto. A poor peasant who rises to affluence, he has great natural nobility and dignity. A powerful figure, with a character of operatic size and passion. The voice needs to have a pop/rock sound or a classical sound of extraordinary textual clarity.

  • Playing age: 30–45 years
  • Height guide: 175 — 193 cm

Auditions

Auditions will be held on Tuesday 10th December 2024 at Girlguiding Birmingham, Trefoil House, 2 Ellis Street, Birmingham.

If needed, callbacks will take place on Thursday 12th December 2024 at Girlguiding Birmingham, Trefoil House, 2 Ellis Street, Birmingham.

Rehearsal commitment

Rehearsals are normally held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and as we get closer to the production, Sunday afternoons. No absences are permitted from 29th April until the end of show week.

There should be no more than 3 absences in the rehearsal period and no absences as stated from 29th April.

Applicants for this key role should be able to commit to the full rehearsal schedule.

Participation fee

The participation fee for the successful candidate will be covered as part of a sponsorship package for the production.

Other information

  • Every cast member will be expected to sell at least 30 tickets to family and friends.
  • Costumes will be provided, and you may be required to attend a costumier for a fitting. Some supplementary costume elements will be supplied by cast members.
  • The company committee reserve the right to change the above arrangements as necessary.
